Let’s dive in.
Understanding the Core Principles of Limitless
Living in a foreign country like Japan isn’t just about adapting to a new environment—it’s about adapting ourselves. It’s about building resilience when faced with uncertainty, developing the confidence to navigate unfamiliar situations, and believing in our ability to thrive, no matter the obstacles.
That’s where Limitless by Jim Kwik becomes a game-changer. This book isn’t just about learning faster—it’s about unlocking the full potential that already exists within us. It teaches us how to reprogram our mindset, harness motivation, and use effective strategies to grow into the best version of ourselves.
As foreigners in Japan, we often face challenges that test our patience and self-belief. Whether it’s struggling with the language, adjusting to cultural norms, or building a sense of belonging, the key to overcoming these hurdles isn’t just external adaptation—it’s internal transformation.
Let’s explore the three core principles of Limitless—Mindset, Motivation, and Methods—and how applying them can help us not just survive, but thrive in a foreign land.
The Three M’s: Mindset, Motivation, and Methods
At the heart of Limitless are three foundational principles that determine how far we can go in life. By mastering these, we can break through self-imposed limits and unlock the limitless potential within us.
1. Mindset: Shifting from Limitation to Possibility
How often do we tell ourselves:
“I’ll never be good at Japanese.”
“I don’t think I can fit in here.”
“I’m just not smart enough to figure this out.”
These thoughts don’t reflect reality; they reflect our beliefs about reality. Jim Kwik teaches that our mindset—the stories we tell ourselves—can either hold us back or set us free.
For example, I used to feel completely defeated whenever I had to fill out my child’s school forms in Kanji. I’d stare at the unfamiliar characters, convinced I’d never understand. But then I realized something: I don’t need to know everything—I just need to know how to find the answers.
So, I stopped telling myself, “I can’t do this,” and instead asked, “How can I make this easier?” I used Google Translate, sought help from friends, and learned the most common phrases used in school paperwork. Over time, what once felt impossible became manageable.
The key lesson?
Your mindset defines your reality. Instead of thinking “I can’t,” start asking “How can I?” Every challenge is just a puzzle waiting to be solved.
2. Motivation: Finding Your Inner Drive
Motivation isn’t just about willpower—it’s about having a strong enough why to keep going, even when things get tough.
Ask yourself:
• Why do I want to grow and succeed in Japan?
• What would becoming more confident and capable mean for me?
• Who else will benefit if I step into my full potential?
For me, I realized my motivation wasn’t just about learning Japanese or adjusting to life here. It was about setting an example for my children—that no matter where we are, we have the power to adapt, grow, and thrive.
Kwik’s Formula for Motivation is simple but powerful:
Purpose × Energy × Small Simple Steps = Lasting Motivation
This means:
• Find your deep purpose. What drives you?
• Take care of your energy. Good sleep, nutrition, and mental clarity fuel success.
• Start small. Progress is made in daily steps, not giant leaps.
Once you align your actions with your deeper purpose, staying motivated becomes natural.
The Power of a Purpose That Refuses to Let You Quit
There’s a kind of fire that doesn’t burn out.
It doesn’t fade when life gets hard.
It doesn’t give up when doors close or when the odds seem unfair.
It’s the kind of fire lit by a purpose so strong, it won’t let you quit—not today, not ever.
That’s the kind of fire I carry with me every single day.
My journey as a foreigner in Japan has never been easy. It’s been filled with uncertainty, trials, and moments that tested everything inside me.
But underneath it all, I’ve always known one thing: my family is my why.
They are my reason, my strength, my heartbeat.
I’m not learning for the sake of knowledge alone.
I’m learning because I must.
On page 129 of Limitless, Jim Kwik asked, “Why do you want to learn?”
My answer came from the deepest part of me:

“I want to learn how to learn so I can learn the things that I must learn to build a business that gives me financial freedom and security for my family.”
That one sentence? It holds my entire vision.
But on page 131, he asked something even more confronting:
What would happen if you don’t learn how to apply these tools?
The truth hit me hard:

“I have to work until I die, not enough money to buy what I want, and I can’t afford to give my children a good education and financial security, so they have to work hard to earn a living for themselves.”
It was painful to think. But it motivates me to keep going.
And sometimes, pain is the push you need when love alone feels too gentle.
I don’t have the luxury to quit.
But here’s the beautiful part—on the next page, Jim asked us to imagine what life could look like if we did apply what we learned.
That part gave me chills, because I wrote:

“I’ll be able to learn how to build a business from home that can give me financial freedom. Others had done it, so I can do it too. I can build a business for my family back in the Philippines as my tribute to them for their love, unwavering support, and belief in me. And most importantly, I can give my children the freedom to live life as they want to. I want them to get excited with the new experiences and opportunities that they can experience because I am well able to provide all that they can possibly wish for this lifetime.”
That dream alone moves me every single day.
It’s not just about chasing my own dreams —it’s making an impact.
It’s about creating a business that gives me the time, resources, and freedom to live life on my own terms… and more importantly, to gift that same freedom to the ones I love most.
So yes, my path may be uncertain.
My story might be different than most.
But my purpose is unshakable.
And I know I’m not the only one.
If you’ve ever felt the pressure of building a life from scratch in a place that doesn’t speak your language…
If you’ve ever cried in silence because you felt like no one could understand what you’re carrying…
If you’ve ever promised your kids a better life and are fighting every day to make that promise real—
You’re not alone.
Let your love fuel you.
Let your purpose hold you.
Let your vision pull you forward.
Because Limitless isn’t just a book—it’s a wake-up call. A roadmap. A reminder that
you already have everything within you to create the life you’ve always dreamed of.
You need to believe that you are—already—limitless.
And then?
Move like it.
3. Methods: Learning How to Learn and Adapt Faster
Living in a foreign country like Japan can often feel like being dropped into the middle of a fast-paced train station without a map. Everything is unfamiliar—language, customs, paperwork, even the unspoken rules. For many of us foreigners, that constant wave of “new” can be overwhelming. But what if the struggle isn’t with the content we’re trying to learn, but with the way we’re learning?
Jim Kwik reminds us that learning is not something we’re born knowing how to do—it’s a skill. And like any skill, it can be sharpened, strengthened, and refined.
If we can learn how to learn, we can adapt to anything.
And that’s the game-changer.
The FASTER Method: A Smart Way to Learn and Retain More
Kwik introduces a powerful framework called the FASTER Method to help us retain more of what we learn. Here’s how each part works, and how it applies directly to us as foreigners navigating life in Japan:
1. F – Forget:
Let go of what you think you know. As foreigners, we carry beliefs like “I’m too old to learn Japanese” or “I’ll never understand how this system works.” These thoughts block us from truly learning. Emptying your cup creates space for new understanding.
2. A – Act:
Passive learning doesn’t stick. Actively participate in your learning journey.
For instance, when reading an official form in Kanji, instead of panicking or ignoring it, open Google Translate. Snap a picture. Highlight the words. The act of solving it yourself creates neural pathways that help you remember and build confidence.
3. S – State:
Your emotional state affects how well you learn. Feeling tired, frustrated, or defeated while trying to understand your city hall papers or your child’s school newsletter? Pause. Take a breath. Change your state. Put on uplifting music, sip an iced tea, or move around—then try again. A positive emotional state enhances memory and engagement.
4. T – Teach:
One of the fastest ways to cement your learning is to teach it. Learn how to navigate a certain app or school process? Share it with another foreign mom. Not only are you helping someone else, you’re reinforcing your own knowledge.
5. E – Enter:
Schedule time to learn. Block a few minutes a day to study Hiragana or learn a new skill for your dream business. Consistency beats intensity.
6. R – Review:
Go back over what you’ve learned. This is where Spaced Repetition comes in. Revisiting small bits of info regularly helps it sink into long-term memory.
Additional Tools to Boost Learning and Adaptability
• Mind Mapping:
Mind mapping is a technique that allows you to visually structure your ideas, making complex information more digestible and connections more apparent.
Create a visual map of your ideas. Planning your business? Mind map your niche, your products, or services, your audience, and strategies. This method helps organize your thoughts and make connections you didn’t see before.
This one’s a game-changer. Whenever I feel like my thoughts are all over the place, I create a visual map of everything in my head. Let’s say you’re planning to build a business—start by writing down your main idea in the center. Then branch out to your niche, your products or services, who you want to help, what platforms you might use, and how you’ll market it. Suddenly, you’ll start seeing connections and patterns that weren’t clear before. It’s like untangling a knot in your brain.

• Visualization:
Visualization involves creating a detailed mental image of achieving your goals, which can enhance motivation and prepare your mind for real-life execution.
Honestly, this one hit deep. Kwik talks about visualizing your future—not as some far-off fantasy, but as a real picture you’re wiring into your mind. I started doing this. I would close my eyes and picture myself confidently managing my blog, replying to emails from happy readers, running a business that actually supports my kids’ dreams. Not someday—now. When you make that vision feel real, your brain starts searching for ways to make it happen. It’s not magic—it’s the mindset.
• Microlearning:
Microlearning focuses on acquiring knowledge in small, manageable units, making it easier to fit learning into a busy schedule and retain information effectively.
This one saved me from burnout. Instead of trying to learn everything in one sitting (which always left me exhausted and frustrated), I broke things into small, focused chunks. Like:
• Today, I’ll watch a YouTube video about SEO for beginners.
• Tomorrow, I’ll learn how to create a Table of Contents so my readers can have easy access to the topics on my blogs.
• The next day, I’ll create social media for my blog.
I even made myself a checklist—trust me, it’s so satisfying to tick off each step. Learning this way doesn’t just feel doable—it works. You actually remember things because you’re not overloading your brain, and you’ll know what the priorities are or not.

Embracing Limitless Thinking for Success in Any Country
And so, my friend, if you’re reading this… maybe you’re standing exactly where I once stood—with hope in your heart, but also fear in your hands. In a country where everything feels unfamiliar, where every step forward seems to come with a question mark, it’s easy to feel lost. But let me tell you this: you’re not lost. You’re just becoming.
Living in a foreign land doesn’t mean you have to shrink who you are to fit in. It means you now have the opportunity to expand, to stretch beyond what you thought possible, and to build something that not only changes your life but uplifts the people you love the most.
This is the power of limitless thinking. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about believing that you’re capable of learning, adapting, and thriving—no matter where you are planted. Jim Kwik reminded me that learning how to learn is the ultimate superpower—and now I’m reminding you.
Because here’s what I believe deep in my soul:
Your dreams are valid.
Your purpose is powerful.
And your story isn’t over yet.
You were never meant just to survive life in a foreign land—you were meant to rise, to grow, to lead, and to inspire. That dream burning in your chest? That’s your compass. Follow it.
As for me, I’m not chasing a perfect life—I’m building a life that feels like home. A business that lets me raise my kids with love and freedom. A future where I no longer ask for permission to dream big. And you can do the same: one step, one belief, one lesson at a time.
Wherever you are in the world, know this:
You are not alone.
You are not behind.
And most of all, you are not limited.
Let’s rise together, boldly and beautifully.
Here’s to your limitless life—starting now!
