Welcome to A Gaijin Life!

In November 2009, I stepped off the plane at Chubu Centrair International Airport clutching nothing but a trainee visa and dreams bigger than my suitcase. The crisp autumn air of Nagoya carried the scent of possibility, and little did I know that this moment would be the first page of an incredible story that would completely transform my life. That initial chapter as a trainee would lead to love, marriage, motherhood, and eventually, establishing permanent roots in this fascinating country I now call home.

Like many gaijin (foreigners) in Japan, my journey wasn’t a straight path. After falling in love with both the country and a half-Filipino, half-Japanese, having our first beautiful child, life took me on a brief detour back to my homeland. But Japan’s magnetic pull was too strong to resist. By 2013, I returned – this time not as a temporary visitor, but as an immigrant ready to build a permanent life here. Now, over a decade later, I’m blessed with two amazing children who fill our home with laughter, cultural richness, and daily adventures. Looking back at that nervous trainee from 2009, I never could have imagined the rich tapestry of experiences that awaited me.

Starting this blog feels like opening my heart and sharing more than a decade’s worth of insights, challenges, and triumphs with fellow travelers on this unique path. Through countless moments of confusion (like my first encounter with Japan’s infamous garbage sorting system!), celebration (discovering the joy of hanami with my own family), and growth (navigating the complexities of raising bicultural children), I’ve gathered the kind of wisdom that only comes from living between two worlds. These are the stories and lessons I wish someone had shared with me when I first arrived – not just the practical how-tos, but the deep, emotional truths about building a life in a country that can feel both wonderfully welcoming and mysteriously distant at the same time.

Culture Insights That Matter

Living in Japan isn’t just about mastering chopsticks or bowing at the right angle (though we’ll definitely talk about those!). It’s about understanding the subtle dance of social relationships, the unspoken rules that govern daily life, and the beautiful traditions that have survived centuries of change.

Have you ever wondered why your Japanese colleagues seem to read your mind at work? Or why does your neighbor insist on giving you vegetables from their garden? Or why do your colleagues give you “okashi” ( Japanese snacks and sweets) when they go back to work after they suddenly take absent leave because their child has a fever? These cultural nuances form the fabric of daily life here, I’ll help you understand them from an immigrant’s perspective.
